Planting & Growing
At Mossley Hill Childcare we nurture a love for nature and sustainability in our children by providing hands-on gardening experiences.
We introduce children to sustainability, responsibility, and environmental awareness by engaging them in growing fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
Gardening offers numerous benefits for children, supporting their overall development in various ways:
- Activities like digging, planting, and watering enhance motor skills, strength, and coordination.
- Engaging with plants and insects boosts early maths and science skills, as well as pre-reading skills through labelling and drawing.
- It teaches children about life-cycles and the importance of nurturing living things.
- Working together in the garden improves social interactions and teamwork.
- Caring for plants teaches children about responsibility and empathy, helping them understand that living things need care and attention to thrive.
- It nurtures an interest in nature and the environment.
At our nursery, we believe that learning about food should be an adventure!
Our “Farm to Fork” approach is designed to give nursery children a hands-on, playful understanding of where their food comes from, how it grows, and how it fuels their bodies.
The journey doesn’t end in the garden! Children help harvest what they grow and bring it into the nursery. They engage in safe, age-appropriate food prep—like washing leaves, mashing avocados, or tearing herbs—to see how raw ingredients transform into delicious meals.
Our Farm to Fork foster sustainability and respect for the planet, boost fine motor skills through planting and chopping, and encourage fussy eaters to try new fruits and vegetables because they helped grow or prepare them themselves.
We love watching our children become proud, curious food explorers who understand and appreciate the journey from a tiny seed in the mud to the delicious food on their forks!
